How Do SureSmile Aligners Work?

SureSmile aligners use the same basic treatment methodology as all other clear aligner treatments like Invisalign. They are an alternative to braces. Instead of using metal brackets, wires, rubber elastics, and other components to shift your teeth, they use clear, smooth, invisible plastic “aligners.”

These aligners are built to fit over your teeth perfectly, and they look similar to a night guard for teeth grinding or a retainer. Each set of aligners is meant to apply gentle and even pressure to your teeth, shifting them toward a healthier position. Over time, you switch between multiple sets of aligners, resulting in major changes to the alignment of your teeth and your bite.

Most patients are good candidates for SureSmile aligners, since they are highly versatile and can be used to treat most minor-to-moderate orthodontic problems. However, patients with very extensive or complex orthodontic problems may require treatment with traditional braces instead.

Understanding The SureSmile Process

To begin the process, you’ll come and visit Dr. Vishart for an orthodontic consultation in Dedham. She will assess your smile, perform a comprehensive oral exam, take digital impressions of your teeth, and determine if you’re a good candidate for SureSmile.

If she approves you for treatment, she will start working with SureSmile and use your digital impressions to build your unique, individualized treatment plan. Once this is done, SureSmile will manufacture your first few sets of custom-built aligners.

You will come back to Digital Dental Studio in a few weeks to pick up these aligners. Dr. Vishart will give you instructions on how to care for them, and will also give you more information about how they are to be worn. Usually, you will wear each set of aligners for about 2 weeks, and you should keep them in your mouth for 20-22 hours per day or longer. The more consistent you are, the better and faster your results will be.

Typically, you will switch to a new set of aligners every 2 weeks. About every 4-6 weeks, you will come back to our Dedham office for a quick checkup. Dr. Vishart will ensure that your treatment is on track, and give you a few more sets of SureSmile aligners to wear.

And that’s pretty much it! This same basic process will be repeated until your smile looks perfect. Once you’re done, Dr. Vishart will build a set of retainers for you to wear. You’ll need to wear these at night to ensure your teeth stay in place.

The Benefits Of SureSmile Aligners

First, SureSmile aligners are completely invisible when worn. They do not affect your appearance or speech at all, so they are much more subtle than braces. Additionally, they are very comfortable, since there are no sharp metal components that may poke your mouth.

You also get faster results compared to braces. In most cases, patients need about 20-22 sets of aligners to correct their smile, which means the average treatment time is under a year. Braces usually must be worn for 12-18 months at a minimum.

SureSmile is also very convenient. You can take your aligners out to eat, so there are no dietary restrictions. You also can take them out to clean your teeth, and to do things like play sports and musical instruments.
